RANKS AND PROMOTIONS IN INDIAN ARMY


UPDATE:A new rank of Chief of Defence Staff(CDS) started from 1 Jan,2020.CDS is head of Army, Navy and air force.Currently Gen.Bipin Rawat holds this rank.

Gentleman Cadet(GC): A trainee is considered as Gentleman cadet on admission to Indian Military Academy until his passing-out Parade.
Pay: A Gentleman Cadets gets a fixed stipend of Rs. 56,100/- Per Month

Commissioned Officer's Ranks and promotions:

  • Lieutenant: On completing training from the academy any officer is commissioned as Lieutenant in Indian Army. 
 Shoulder Patch: Two five pointed stars.
 Salary: Placed in Pay Band 10 (Rs. 56,100-1,77,500)
  • Captain: On Completion of 2 years of reckonable Commissioned Service in Indian Army.
Shoulder Patch: Three five pointed Stars.
Salary: Placed in Pay Band 10B(Rs. 61,300-1,93,900)
  • Major: On completion of 6 years of reckonable Commissioned Service in Indian Army subject to pass Part B Exam.
What is Part B Exam?
In Part B exam officer has to appear for a subjects
TACTICS 
ADMINISTRATION & MORALE
MILITARY LAW
MILITARY HISTORY
CURRENT AFFAIRS
SPECIAL TO CORPS 
These papers are taken in a 6-day long process. Officer has to qualify in each paper with a minimum number of marks.

Shoulder Patch: National Emblem.
Salary: Placed in Pay Band 11 (Rs. 69,400-2,07,200)
  • Lieutenant Colonel: On completion of 13 years of reckonable Commissioned Service in Indian Army subject to pass Part D Exam.
What is Part D Exam?
Like Part B Exam, in this exam also, officer has to pass in 6 subjects as mentioned above with a minimum number of marks.

Badge on Shoulder: National Emblem above one five pointed star.
Salary: Placed in Pay Band 12A (Rs. 1,21,200-2,12,400)

  • Colonel:  It is a selection grade rank. Minimum 15 years of commissioned service is required for selection. Time scale promotion is 26 years in commissioned service.
Shoulder Patch: National Emblem above two five pointed stars.
Collar Patch: Crimson Patches with golden braids.
Salary: Placed in Pay Band 13(Rs. 1,30,600-2,15,900)
Retirement Age: 54 Years
  • Brigadier: It is a selection grade rank. Minimum 25 years of Commissioned service is required.No Time scale promotion.
Shoulder Patch: National Emblem above three five pointed stars arranged in triangle.
Collar Patch: Crimson Patches with one golden star.
Salary: Placed in Pay Band 13A (Rs. 1,39,600-2,17,600)
Retirement Age: 56 Years

  • Major General: Selection Grade Rank. Minimum 28 years of Commissioned service is required
Shoulder Patch: One five pointed star above crossed baton and sabre.
Collar Patch: Crimson Patches with two golden stars.
Salary: Placed in Pay Band 14 (Rs. 1,44,200-2,18,200)
Retirement age: 58 years.

  • Lieutenant General: Selection Grade Rank. Minimum 36 years of Commissioned service is required.
Shoulder Patch: National Emblem above crossed baton and sabre.
Collar Patch: Crimson Patches with three golden stars.
Salary: HAG Scale - Pay Band 15 (Rs. 1,82,200-2,24,100)
HAG+ Scale - Pay Band 16 (Rs. 2,05,400-2,24,400)(Admissible to 1/3 of total Lt. Generals)
Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS)/Army Commanders/NFSG - Pay Band 17 (Rs.2,25,000/-)
Retirement Age: 60 years.

  • General: Chief of Army Staff of Indian Army (COAS) 
Shoulder Patch: National Emblem above five pointed star, all above crossed baton and sabre.
Collar Patch: Crimson Patches with four golden stars.
Salary: Pay Band 18 ( Rs. 2,50,000)
Retirement Age: 62 years or 3 years as COAS whichever is earlier.

  • Field Marshal: War time/ Honorary Rank. Two Appointments has been made ever.
Shoulder Patch: National emblem over a crossed baton and sabre in a lotus blossom wreath.
Collar Patch: Crimson Patches with five golden stars.
Retirement Age: Life Long.

How to Join Indian Army?

What is 'TOUR of DUTY' ?

After getting so many requests, I am writing this blog. Kindly consider that all of the information mentioned in this post is not official. TOUR of DUTY(ToD) is a proposal yet and no notification has been released by army yet. Indian army is considering this proposal to enlist civilians to join Indian Army on a voluntary basis for a period of 3 years. It is just like internship which includes 1 year of training and 3 years of service in Indian Army. Proposed model of ToD is to be implemented on a trial basis by releasing 100 vacancies for Officer's Post and 1000 vacancies for Soldier's Post. If successful, vacancies would be increased.
