Service Selection Board Interviews the candidates for commissioned officer's entry in Indian Army
It is one of the most prestigious interview in India.
It is a 5-day long interview which makes it unique .

The interview comprises of a two stage process:
STAGE 1: Officer Intelligence Rating(OIR), Picture Perception & Description Test (PP&DT)
STAGE 2: Psychology Tests, Group testing officer's Task(GTO), Personal Interview(PI), Conference.
Detailed Interview Procedure:
DAY 0 ( REPORTING)
After Receiving Call letter from SSB, candidate have to report the allotted centre as per date and time alloted in call up letter.
Generally candidate have to report at MCO(Moment controller Officer) at nearest railway station. It is always mentioned in the call letter.
Carry all the requisite documents to prove your educational qualification with originals and 2-3 self attested photocopy. Carry 20-30 passport size photographs.
After checking documents candidates are then taken to the selection centre in a bus.
Candidates have to submit their phones at the centre.
Their documents are re-checked here.
Candidates are provided with Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) form in which candidate have to fill educational qualification, family background etc. It is a very important form as information provided by you in this form might be asked in the personal interview. Do not fake or falsify information as it may affect your interview and can lead to rejection.
Then the candidates are served with breakfast or lunch.
Stage 1 procedure is carried out on the same day if reporting is early in the morning otherwise interview starts from next day onwards.
Day 1 ( Screening Test):
Screening test comprises of two tests: verbal and non- verbal test and picture perception test followed by a group discussion.
- Verbal and Non-Verbal Test: It consists of reasoning questions based on relations,sequences, aptitude etc. to check the general IQ of the potential candidates. Questions are not hard but time provided is very less.
- Picture Perception & Group Discussion: In this test, a hazzy and unclear picture is shown for 30s. Then candidate has to narrate a relevant story in 3 minutes. After that, candidate are divided into groups of 15-16. Then each individual narrates his story to others and interviewing officer observes the group discussion.
This test is very important to qualify for the next stage of the interview. The candidates who are unable to qualify this test are not interviewed further and are sent back to their home after paying TA to them if they are eligible.
Day 2 (Psychology Tests):
- Thematic Appreciation test(TAT): In this test candidates are provided with 11 slides in which last slide is a blank slide. Each slide lasts for 30s then candidate has to narrate a story in 4 mins.Then next slide is shown for 30s and this process repeats.
- Word Appreciation Test(WAT): In this test 60 words are shown on the screen. Candidate has to form a sentence on the provided word. Each word remains on the screen for 15 sec. Candidate has to form and write rapidly in 15s.
- Situation Reaction Test(SRT): In this test, candidates are provided with a booklet having 60 situations written in it. candidate has to write their response against each situation. Time allotted for this test is 30 mins.
- Self Description Test(SDT): In this test candidate has to write their opinions about their teachers, parents, friends , themselves etc. Time alloted for this test is 15 minutes.
This all test requires a stable mind to think and a good speed as candidates are provided with a very less time in which they have to think and respond quickly. Do not try to manipulate in this test else you will be caught somewhere and hence it will lead to your rejection.
Day 3&4 (Group Testing Officer Tasks)(GTO):
These tasks are performed along with group members. Your coordination along with other members is evaluated here. Never try to show you are superior among the other members. Try to make your group best.
- Group Discussion (GD):In this test two topics are given back to back by the interviewing officer to the groups mostly of current affairs, candidates then do group discussion on that topic. Interviewer carefully observes and listens to the points of each candidate.
- Group/Military Planning Exercise (GPE/MPE): In this exercise a real life practical model of any problem is given to each group then the group have to find a common solution or plan of action to that problem. Solution is explained by one candidate the group with the help of map.
- Progressive Group Tasks(PGT): In these tasks each group has to cross some obstacles with the help of some things such as ropes, wooden planks etc. following some certain rules which are mentioned by the GTO. It is a task involving all group members.
- Half Group Tasks(HGT): These tasks are same as the PGT but half the number of group members are present so as to check the potential of each candidate more fairly.
- Individual Obstacle Tasks(IOT): Individuals have to cross 10 different obstacles in a specified time in IOT. Points are given to the candidates according to their way of crossing the obstacles.
- Group Obstacle Race/Snake Race: In this task each group competes with other groups. They have to cross some obstacles with the help of a snake like rope following some certain rules. It is a kind of race among groups.
- Command Task: In this task any candidate is commander of tasks. He/she has to cross some obstacles with the help of 2-3 subordinates. You can choose them by yourself. They will take up your orders only.
Bomb Defusing Task
- Final Group Task(FGT): It is same as PGT. It is one another opportunity for group to show their potentials.
- Lecturette: In this task, Candidate is provided with 4 topics from which they can select 1 topic and have to give a speech or lecture for 3 minutes.
- Personal Interview (PI): It is a very important part of the interview. Interviewing officer will ask you about your education, family background, hobbies or interests,etc. It is a more of a conversation and can last from 15 min- 1.5h. Be genuine during interview, do not falsify anything. Be honest. Any lie will lead to your rejection.
Day 5 (Conference):
- Most crucial part of the SSB interview. candidate has to face the SSB Board Members (President,Deputy President,GTO,Psychologist,Interviewing officer). They will ask you simple questions like how was you stay, about your experience so as to make a final decision whether to recommend you or not. Border line candidates may be asked some more questions.
- Within an hour result is declared.
Finally recommended candidates are made to stay for 3-5 more days for medical examination. Then candidates are sent back home to wait for the merit list.
If your name appears in the merit list then you will get Joining letter from Indian Military Academy(IMA).
