Badges earned by Para Commando:

  • BALIDAAN BADGE: It is insignia of PARA forces. It has a commando dagger pointed downwards, with upward-extending wings extending from the blade and a scroll superimposed on the blade with “Balidaan” inscribed in Devanagari, the whole in silver metal on an upright red plastic rectangle.
  • Shoulder Badge: Curved maroon coloured shoulder badge with SPECIAL FORCES title embroidered on it in light blue.
  • Head Gear: Maroon Beret is worn by Para Commandos.
  • Insignia (Regimental Badge) : The regimental badge for the Parachute Regiment is an open parachute, partially behind a circle with the word "Parachute" at the top and a scroll at the bottom with the word "Regiment"; wings are spread out from the circle, and a dagger is superimposed on the parachute and upper portion of the circle; the whole in silver metal.
  • Para Wings: Paratrooper Wings is earned after successful completion of Parachute basic course and worn on the right Brest pocket above the name plate.Generally, comprises of white coloured open parachute with light blue wings attached to it against a greyish background.
  • ATGM Badge: Anti Tank Guided Missile Course Qualified.It is earned during Battalion support weapon (BSW) course after successfully hitting the target. Trained to knock armoured vehicles and tanks.
  • Combat Free Fall Badge: Earned after combat free fall course, 50 jumps from 33,500 ft learning both HIGH altitude high opening and low altitude low opening jumps. GOLDEN in colour.
  • Diving Badge: It depicts diver fully geared with combat load and ready for underwater operations. Endurance Stamina and strength along with skills in weapons and explosives.
  • Qualification Wings (Jump Indicator): A brass badge with stars at the bottom of the parachute, with one star denoting 25 jumps, two stars 50 and three stars 100 on the left pocket.
  • Special Action Group(SAG) & Commando Dagger Badge: On deputation in National Security Guards(NSG)
  • Snow Lion & Maverick Badge: Deputed in SFF has snow lion badge while in special group support a Maverick Badge.
  • Name Plate: Over Right side Pocket having Commando name.
  • Unit's Insignia: Below Name Plate.
  • Medals and Gallantry Awards/Ribbon: Above Left side Pocket.
  • Commendation Card: individual acts of gallantry or distinguished service or devotion to duty performed either in operation or non-operational areas which are not of a sufficiently high order to qualify for a higher gallantry award or for which the higher award is inappropriate. The award will be for a specific act of bravery or distinguished or special service. The award will not be made posthumously.” All three branches issue Commendations Cards at the level of the highest officer (Chief of the Army Staff, Chief of the Naval Staff and Chief of the Air Staff). The awards at lower levels seem to vary between services.
  • US Parachutist Badge: Earned by those who undergoes joint Military Exercises with US army such as Vajra Prahar.

  1. The para wing is the air forne one, army wears the one with a green background. The special forces badge shwon with a dagger on a red background is a commando instructors' badge, not a balidaan, which has a winged dagger with balidan inscribed on a scroll on the blade of the dagger

  2. The US parachute badge is not awarded, but exchanged with the US personnel on a friendly basis. You just need to have friendly jump with them, after which you exchange wings.

What is 'TOUR of DUTY' ?

After getting so many requests, I am writing this blog. Kindly consider that all of the information mentioned in this post is not official. TOUR of DUTY(ToD) is a proposal yet and no notification has been released by army yet. Indian army is considering this proposal to enlist civilians to join Indian Army on a voluntary basis for a period of 3 years. It is just like internship which includes 1 year of training and 3 years of service in Indian Army. Proposed model of ToD is to be implemented on a trial basis by releasing 100 vacancies for Officer's Post and 1000 vacancies for Soldier's Post. If successful, vacancies would be increased.
