To Join Para, there is no direct entry, Soldiers or officers from Indian army are selected on the basis of their performance when they volunteer for special forces.
Recruitment Process to Join Special Forces:
For Soldiers: Eligible Candidates scoring 100% Marks in Physical Test and atleast 50% Marks in their written test with their names in merit list are eligible to volunteer for the ELITE PARA forces. They have to inform their ARO's prior to their despatch. They have to give some additional tests and they are sent for their probation period. Candidates failing in their probation periods are sent back to their respective parent regiments.
For Officers: After completing training from IMA/OTA any officer can volunteer for PARA SF. They have to give some special tests. Upon qualifying those tests, the officer is sent for Probation, if failed in probation period officer is sent back to its parent regiment for which he has opted for earlier.
Special tests taken before sending for Probation:
- 5 Kms run in 20 minutes.
- 14 Chin Ups.
- 40 repetitions of Push-ups in 1 min.
- 80 repetitions of Sit-ups in 2 mins.
- 17 times meter Shuttle in 1 min.
The selected candidates are dispatched to PRTC where selected candidates are examined. If candidate is not able to meet the training standards of PRTC, he is sent back to parent regiment for further training.
Probation Period of 10 PARA(SF) Hardest (known for desert warfare):
- Setting up a tent with tarpaulin,bucket, rope and knife.
- 4 days without eating.
- 1 litre water for 3 days.
- No sleep for 7 days.
- Always carries 10 kg weight on their back.
- 10km, 20km, 30km, 40km speed walks with 25 kg additional Weight within stipulated time.
- 100 km Endurance run in 3 stages(40+30+30) within given time.
- Choosing right path in desert with compass alone.
- They eat scorpions by killing and roasting them after removing venom.
- Collect dew to drink.
- There are much more tasks they have to complete.............
Scorpion Kings
Different Para SF battalions have different Probation criteria ranging from 3-6 months.
After completing Probation, during the dining- in ceremony the candidate officer, after finishing his first drink has to break the piece of glass and chew it till it becomes sand and then have to gulp it down with some whisky. All other officers do the same. They receives Maroon beret but BALIDAAN badge is received only after first successful operation.
What after probation?
After successfully completing probation period, candidates are then trained specifically according to their aptitude. The PARA and PARA SF forces has to be deal with highly specialised tasks which requires high standard of physical and mental strength. So they are trained specifically in one of the following:-
- Under Water Diving
- Paramotor Pilot
- Combat Free Fall
- Rock Craft & ICE Craft
- IGLA & A/Tk missile Pilot.
Specialisations of a PARA commando:
- Communication
- First- Aid & Trauma Management
- Demolitions
- Combat Survival
- Weapons inclusive of Sniping.
- Unarmed Combat & PTKE ( Type of Martial Art)
- Language skills & Cultural Skills
- Physical & Mental Robustness, Stress Handling.
Other Benefits:
- A soldier receives Rs. 17,300 as Special Forces Allowance and Rs. 6000 as PARA pay other than all allowances and pays that are entitled to a normal army soldier.
- ELITE status in Indian Army with Maroon Beret.
