Besides, the project is of utmost importance and need to be worked out soon. But yet final nitty-gritty have to be worked out which requires time for its induction. Appropriate procurement of required foreign technology and advancement of technology in India is yet to be established.India has to increase its capability to manufacture fighter jets on its own.
Being a great military power, it is very necessary for India to become self-reliant in the defence production sector. Earlier the govt has declared the FDI in the defence production from 49% to 74% via automatic route so as to increase the defence manufacturing capabilities of India. Govt has also announced separate budget for the procurement of domestic weapons and equipment to reduce its military budget.
India is set for formal allocation for $17 billion budget for multi-role fighter jets under Strategic Partners Procurement Policy.
As per this policy, Production is to made with the help of domestic private defence production companies with one of the original equipment manufacturers(OEM) approved by the Govt of India.
The process of selecting contractors is yet to begin.
Fighter jet production sector is new for India but several companies are ready to start the production for fighter jets in India which includes:
- TATA Advanced Systems
- ADANI Defence
- Reliance Defence
- Bharat Forge Limited
- Mahindra Defence
Also, Reliance Defence has created a joint venture with Dassault Aviation of France (Manufactures components of Rafale Multirole Fighter Jets)
TATA Advanced Systems has created a joint venture with Lockheed Martin Of USA (F-35 Joint Striker Manufacturer)
ADANI Defence is teaming with Saab AB of Sweden (GRIPEN Jet Manufacturer)
In 2018, India had sent Request for Information(RFI) for the production of 114 Multirole fighter jets from several foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers(OEM).Those who responded to RFI were:
- Dassault Aviation of France
- Saab AB of Sweden
- Lockheed Martin of USA
- Boeing of USA
- Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG
- Sukhoi Company of Russia
- Airbus Defence and Space of Germany
India is planning to induct these 114 multirole fighter plans in the next 12 years.
RFI made by India included:
- Requirement for transfer of technology including transfer of design, development, manufacturing and repair expertise.
- Requirement for unilateral capability to integrate weapons, systems and sensors.
- Capability to upgrade the aircraft and a provision on exporting the aircraft.
- Transfer of Technology for stealth technology,active electronically scanned array radars, avionics, electronic warfare systems and engines.
