The induction of this indigenous tailless compound delta wing aircraft is inaugurated at Sulur Air Force Base Station near Coimbatore by our Air Force Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria. This is the second Squadron to be Equipped with LCA Tejas after No. 45 Squadron.
No. 18 Squadron, "The Flying Bullets" was formed on April 15,1965 with motto "Teevra aur Nirbhaya" meaning "Swift & Fearless". This Squadron is known for its remarkable role during 1971 Kargil War in Srinagar. Before the induction of HAL Tejas, this squadron was flying MiG 27 Aircraft before getting number plated on April 15,2016.
Tejas is built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Indigenously and is equipped with:
- Fly-by-wire Flight Control System: This system replaces conventional manual flight controls by electronic interface. The movements of flights are converted to electronic signals transmitted by wires and flight control computers determine how to move the actuators at each control surface to provide the ordered response. It also interprets the pilot's control inputs as a desired outcome and calculate the control surface positions required to achieve that outcome.
- Integral Digital Avionics: These are real time computer network air-borne systems. This network consists of a number of computing modules capable of supporting numerous applications of differently criticality levels.
- Multi-mode RADAR: RADAR is designed to operate in more than 1 mode with quick switching between these modes(air-to-air, air-to-ground, air-to-sea, terrain-following, or mapping mode)
- All Weather Fire Control RADAR with day and night capabilities.
- Structure made of Composite Material: It employs CFC material for 45% of its air-frame
- Lightest and smallest among 4th Gen Supersonic Combat Aircraft.
