Indian Army Canines(Dogs): Unsung Warriors

Apart from soldiers, Dogs of Armed forces always remained an integral part. They are fearless warriors and prove to be deadly in their attack. This animal always assisted man in uniform with their loyalty in battlefield. They also undergoes a rigorous training procedure just like soldiers and officers in the Indian Army. The dogs in Indian Army was put in the service right from 1959.
Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre and College imparts basic and advance training to the dogs and their trainees in various specializations.
Motto of RVC: 'Pashu Seva Asmakam Dharma'
The dogs are trained in different fields depending on their breed and aptitude. Not every dog is suitable to be recruited in Indian Army, many of the dogs are rejected during training process. Currently, around 1,200 trained dogs of different breeds are serving in Indian Army.
Mainly, foreign breeds are serving in Indian Army like:
  • German Shepherds
  • Labradors
  • Belgian Shepherds
  • Great Swiss Mountain Dogs
But recently army has inducted an indigenous breed of dogs, Mudhol Hound. It is a lean dog with long legs and belongs to family of sight-hounds, means it has keen sense of sight to hunt and prey. Can run Swiftly, Can Sniff Suspected items with its speed and swiftness,it is also a good guard dog.

Various Roles of Specializations of Indian Army Dogs:
  • Drugs & Explosive Detection
  • Mine Detection
  • Tracking
  • Guarding
  • Assaulting
  • Scouting
  • Mob Control
  • Infantry Patrol Dogs
These dogs are coached in commands so as to hold their barks in combat situation thus hiding their position from the enemy.
They are taught to respond to military hand gestures and verbal orders of their handlers.
The dogs and their handlers of RVC are decorated with many Shaurya Chakras , Sena Medals and over 150 President's Commendation Cards.

Retirement: Indian Army Dogs are retired after a ambiguous period of 8-10 years. They are given honorary retirement.
After retirement, they used to be Euthanized ( Mercy killed) earlier. As their post military care seems expensive to Indian Army and they have information of very sensitive places which can be fatal if they fall into enemy hands.
After this was revealed in RTI , there was a huge public outcry. So this move was taken back except for those canines who are suffering from fatal diseases. Now, they are kept in Meerut Cantonment for rehabilitation. They are given little or no physical training here. Many dog lovers adopt the dogs from here and take home the National Heroes who served the nation with the same courage like a soldier.

There is a saying by John Gragon: “Many of the qualities that come so effortlessly to dogs—loyalty, devotion, selflessness, unflagging optimism, unqualified love—can be elusive to humans".
