After retirement, they used to be Euthanized ( Mercy killed) earlier. As their post military care seems expensive to Indian Army and they have information of very sensitive places which can be fatal if they fall into enemy hands.
After this was revealed in RTI , there was a huge public outcry. So this move was taken back except for those canines who are suffering from fatal diseases. Now, they are kept in Meerut Cantonment for rehabilitation. They are given little or no physical training here. Many dog lovers adopt the dogs from here and take home the National Heroes who served the nation with the same courage like a soldier.
There is a saying by John Gragon: “Many of the qualities that come so effortlessly to dogs—loyalty, devotion, selflessness, unflagging optimism, unqualified love—can be elusive to humans".
